Shepherd’s Lookout & Tong’s Hole / Molonglo River, ACT
Two attractive short walks: to Shepherd’s Lookout for views of the Murrumbidgee River, & to Tong’s Hole, a nice stretch of the Molonglo River.
Two short walks here to the north of Canberra. The first, to Shepherd’s Lookout, offers excellent views of the Murrumbidgee River. The second, ‘Tong’s Hole’, drops down to an attractive stretch of the Molonglo River. Nice scenery for very little effort on these walks, and if you do them at sunset you might be joined by the local kangaroos.
Shepherd’s Lookout & Tong’s Hole / Molonglo River: The Scenery
Not entirely sure which mountains these were, but the view is looking south-east on the less direct route to Shepherds Lookout. Views from Shepherds Lookout as the sun went down, right in front of me! I went through the fence to get this panorama of the lookout area. A little down the hill from Shepherds Lookout. Many kangaroos on the Tongs Hole Track. Kangaroos on the move. Walking down to the Molonglo River. Crimson Rosella The Molonglo River Sophia was recovering from a broken foot, and these short walks were perfect for her first time back on the trails. Sunset on our way back up. One of the locals. Nice profile shot. What you looking at?
Track Notes
Both are short walks on tracks. There is about 100m of descent and ascent to Molonglo River and back. The walk to Shepherd’s Lookout is mostly flat.
Both these walks are tracked and obvious. You can make a short loop to Shepherd’s Lookout, and taking the longer route provides extra views over mountains to the south-east. There is a steepish descent to Tong’s Hole, (which I presume is the name of that spot on the Molonglo River), but it is a short track and never difficult. The starts are a one minute drive from each other. More info on the Parks ACT website.
