Rusden Head Track, Morton NP NSW

This is a flat walk along a fire trail to Rusden Head, where there are good views of the Budawangs. There’s a lot of bird life in the area.

Rusden Head Track, Morton NP

There are good views of the Budawangs to be had at the turnaround point of this 2-3 hour walk, but much of the walking is along a fire trail, which can be a bit monotonous. Nevertheless worth it if you want access to views on a straightforward walk, or like us if you’ve already done walks in the area* and want to do something different (*eg, the nearby Mount Bushwalker Track).

Track Notes

It’s a pretty simple walk with only one signposted junction. Track notes can be found in Take a Walk in Southern NSW & the ACT and Take a Walk in Southern NSW & the ACT and on a website I just discovered today, Australian Hiker. You start off on the Little Forest Walking Track, then the trail to Rusden Head (and another to Florance Head) are signposted.

Florance Head. You can also walk to Florance Head from the start point of the Rusden Head walk. Access to this view is a few metres back from the turnaround point through bushes (on the left as you face back the way you came).

Parts of the track were waterlogged. This spot had basically become a small lake.

Views towards the coast from next to a communications tower near the start. Our track notes suggested this detour at the end: instead of returning (sharp left) via the little forest walk you carry on straight for 5-10 mins, then back to the start via the comms tower service trail (about 5-10 mins).
