Pierces Pass to Blue Gum Forest (+ Rigby Hill), Blue Mountains NSW

A classic Blue Mountains walk taking Pierces Pass down to Blue Gum Forest in the Grose Valley, with a side trip to Rigby Hill at the start.

Pierces Pass to Blue Gum Forest (+ Rigby Hill), Blue Mountains

This was my first time down Pierces Pass, and my first time in a long while into the Grose Valley. You can do a quick side trip to Rigby Hill at the start for already excellent views. Return to the start and descend on the Pierces Pass Walking Track through patches of attractive rainforest to the Grose River. Cross the river and walk downstream as far as Blue Gum Forest for perhaps the most attractive vegetation of the day—tall, straight trunked blue gums and various understory plants including tree ferns.

This is an attractive walk with good variety, but expect to be joined by a fair few others, particularly down in the Grose Valley. Track notes at the end.

Rock Orchid. They seemingly grow straight out of the rock, and AI tells me they spread roots into any small cracks and fissures, absorbing all the moisture and nutrients that collect in these spaces.

Track Notes

Pierces Pass to Blue Gum Forest (+ Rigby Hill), Blue Mountains
On marked and obvious tracks the whole way. You have to cross the Grose River in the valley, however that should be fine in dry weather.

Take the signposted turnoff from Bells Line of Road to the car park and picnic area. The track to Rigby Hill is a ~30 minute side trip, and well worth it. Pierces Pass starts from the same spot and is obvious the whole way to the river. I crossed the rover without any trouble, but note that the track is a little washed out on that southern bank—you can walk on the river bed for (very approximately) 20-30 metres and join the track there.  The route is obvious all the way to Blue Gum Forest. Return the way you came. There’s more information on the NPWS website.
