The walk around the fortress city of Namhansanseong 남한산성 is a very nice combination of natural scenery and historic architecture. The complex was built on a mountain (approx 480m high) south of Seoul in the 1600s as an emergency capital. The view of Seoul from the West Gate is excellent, and if you time it like we did, then you can watch the sun set behind the city. The 555m Lotte World Tower is an obvious highlight of that sprawling cityscape.
You can walk various routes and I’ve included a map in the track notes. We did an almost complete circuit starting at the South Gate. There are historic and traditional buildings in the village and elsewhere within the walls, but we stuck to the wall the whole time. More information and track notes at the end.
Namhansanseong Fortress 남한산성 Circuit: The Scenery

Track Notes

We aimed to do this walk in the afternoon so we could see the sunset from a vantage point on the West Gate, at the top left in the above map. From there we missed out a short section of the wall to return directly back to the village. But basically, we did a circuit on top of the wall, walking anti clockwise from the South Gate. Depending on where you park, or where public transport drops you, you can start and end where you like.
It probably took us 2.5 hours for the circuit. It’s an undulating track, although there are some genuinely steep sections.
Here’s a link to the UNESCO entry for this world heritage site, and the main website in Korean I think, but Google translated it for me in Chrome. And a link to the Korea To Do entry in English.
