Lions Head Track, Blue Mountains National Park NSW

A shortish and lesser known walk to Lions Head on the Kings Tableland, in the Blue Mountains, with great valley views for much of the way.

Lions Head Track, Blue Mountains

This walk on the western edge of the Kings Tableland south of Wentworth Falls Village follows an unmarked track to Lions Head, with good views of the Jamieson and Kedumba Valleys for much of the way. Views from Lions head include some pretty impressive cliffs seen through the trees. We walked in late autumn and saw heaps of very interesting mushrooms, so I recommend this timing.

We’d not visited this area before, except for a very short walk to views from Lincolns Rock further up the road on the edge of suburbia. It’s not as spectacular as some parts of the Blue Mountains, but as an informal track it’s likely to be a lot quieter than the famous areas. We didn’t see anybody else on a sunny Saturday. Track notes at the end.

The track became indistinct shortly after this rocky outcrop for maybe 5 minutes walking. It became obvious again later on.

My wife Sophia called the yellowy orange fungi on the left, gingko mushrooms.

There were awesome cliffs to the south. Alas, we only got broken views due to tree cover.

Track Notes

Lions Head Track, Blue Mountains
The start of the track is not signposted nor obvious. Once on the track it is pretty obvious until a few hundred metres from the end when it becomes indistinct for just a short while.

The start of the trail is not signposted and not obvious, but runs directly up a bank next to Kings Tableland Road.  Once on the track it’s pretty obvious until a few hundred metres from Lions Head. You might lose it for a while, but persevere and you’ll pick it up again soon enough. I took a photo of a rocky outcrop shortly before this section:

You can actually see the start of the faint trail on Google Street View in the location marked below. I don’t think you’d see it just driving past, so get your phone out and aim for this location (or as marked on the open topo maps).

The walking is generally easy, but with some overgrown and rugged sections closer to Lions Head, and a few metres of scrambling. It’ll take roughly 2-3 hours return.
