Bomaderry Creek Circuit, Bomaderry Creek Regional Park NSW

A very pleasant walk through a small but atmospheric gorge formed by Bomaderry Creek. There are rocky overhangs, small cliffs, and a variety of vegetation.

This circuit walk in Bomaderry Creek Regional Park was very nice, and the third walk in a single long weekend that exceeded expectations. There are lots of rocky overhangs, small cliffs, a variety of vegetation, including re-growth after fire when we did it, and of course the creek itself, which was picturesque in places. Narrawallee Creek Nature Reserve Circuit, near Ulladulla NSW

A very pleasant walk through open forest, along long beaches and over colourful rocky headlands. And you’ll likely come across various birdlife along the way.

This circuit walk in Narrawallee Creek Nature Reserve exceeded expectations. It starts in fairly open forest and heads towards the coast, then passes through an area containing many cycads, ancient and attractive plants that predate conifers on the evolutionary timeline. It then runs south along Conjola Beach to the many colourful rocks on Buckley’s Point, further on to Narrawallee Creek itself, and then back to the start through a variety of open forest. There’s various bird life along the way, including sea birds nesting along Narrawallee Creek, and black cockatoos in the forest bordering the creek. Monolith Valley to Nibelung Pass, Budawangs NSW

The long but interesting walk into Monolith Valley will reward the enthusiastic hiker with 360 degree views of large rocky outcrops and shear cliffs.

One of the classic NSW day walks, the trek into Monolith Valley is often overshadowed by an ascent of the Castle. For sure the Castle is a must-do walk, but Monolith Valley is an excellent alternative for a different kind of spectacular. The walk into the area along the Castle walls is already awesome, and the views of Monolith Valley are first seen by continuing just past a chained section of Nibelung Pass. There you can climb one of the smaller monoliths for 360 degree views of huge textured rock landforms and distant cliff faces.

The Castle ascent, Morton National Park NSW

Surely one of the best walks in NSW, summiting The Castle (847m) in Morton National Park provides spectacular views of the surrounding cliffs and plateaus in the Budawang Range.

These pics are from our second time up The Castle (847m), one of NSW’s most challenging and spectacular day walks, situated in Morton National Park on the South Coast of NSW near Ulladulla. The views are probably the best I’ve seen in NSW, and with just enough exposure near the top to get the adrenaline flowing, it makes a memorable walk for any fit bushwalker. Rusden Head Track, Morton NP NSW

This is a flat walk along a fire trail to Rusden Head, where there are good views of the Budawangs. There’s a lot of bird life in the area.

There are good views of the Budawangs to be had at the turnaround point of this 2-3 hour walk, but much of the walking is along a fire trail, which can be a bit monotonous. Nevertheless worth it if you want access to views on a straightforward walk, or like us if you’ve already done walks in the area* and want to do something different (*eg, the nearby Mount Bushwalker Track). Drawing Room Rocks Track, Barren Grounds Nature Reserve, NSW

This short but steep track provides easy access to extensive views of the NSW South Coast near Berry. Except not on the day we did it.

Drawing Room Rocks are furniture shaped rock formations 600m up on the escarpment west of Berry on the NSW South Coast. The approximately 30 minute walk to the top is worth it for extensive views to the coast, only when we did it an odd sea mist closed in just as we ascended, so at the top we could see nothing. But it made for atmospheric walking nevertheless. A good option for stretching your legs on a drive further down the South Coast. Mount Bushwalker Track, Morton National Park, NSW

A relatively straightforward walk to extensive views of the Budawangs Mountain Range in Morton National Park.

The Mount Bushwalker Track provides really wide open views of many significant features in the Budawangs Mountain Range, and all for relatively modest effort. There’s also a short side trip worth taking into an atmospheric place called The Gaolhouse, a pocket of rainforest in the crack created by a section of rock falling away from the main cliff face. Granite Falls Track, Morton NP, NSW

A short walk to a rather unique copper coloured waterfall situated in Morton National Park, inland from Sussex Inlet.

This short and easy walk in Morton National Park, inland from Sussex Inlet on the NSW South Coast, ends at a rather unique copper coloured waterfall called Granite Falls. There wasn’t much water falling on the day we went, but it’s the rock colours that make it interesting. If you are driving down or up the coast then it’s worth making the side trip and stretching your legs to check this out. There were also wildflowers in abundance when we visited in mid spring. Pretty Beach to Pebbly Beach Circuit, Murramurang NP, NSW

This longish circuit in Murramarang National Park takes in an attractive stretch of the NSW South Coast, and also climbs to the top of the forested Durras Mountain.

This longish circuit walk in Murramarang National Park near Ulladulla  takes in a very pleasant section of the NSW South Coast, and also rises up about 525m to the top of Durras Mountain. The mountain is forested and doesn’t provide much in the way of views, but it’s a nice enough section and contains lots of cycads, which I don’t see much of. On the coastal stretch there are lots of sandy beaches, rock platforms, bays and headlands.  Continue reading “Pretty Beach to Pebbly Beach Circuit, Murramurang NP, NSW”

Snapper Point & Durras Mountain, Murramarang National Park, NSW

Snapper Point is a headland with impressive cliffs and rock platforms. We then returned to Merry Beach and set off up Durras Mountain for partial views over the coast.

We originally intended to do the Pretty Beach to Pebbly Beach circuit, but set off from the wrong beach (Merry Beach), and came across the rather impressive headland called Snapper Point. This has tall striated cliffs and large rock platforms, and is worth a visit. You can’t continue around the headland though, so we returned to Merry Beach and climbed Durras Mountain to the large water tank at the summit. Although somewhat obscured by rejuvenating native vegetation, there are still partial views of the coast.  Continue reading “Snapper Point & Durras Mountain, Murramarang National Park, NSW”
