Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains NSW

Follow a faint bush track along Burra Korain Ridge in the Blue Mountains, for excellent views of the Grose Valley from Burra Korain Head.

Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains

The sometimes indistinct track along Burra Korain Ridge takes you to Burra Korain Head for excellent views of the Grose Valley. There are roughly three vantage points to get views in all directions, so spend a bit of time exploring the head when you are there.

The walk is along a faint bush track that you might lose from time to time, and disappears near to the head. There’s not a lot to see until you get to the head, much like the nearby walk along Burramoko Ridge to Hanging Rock. But I think I prefer a bush track to a fire trail, and you’ll likely have the route to yourself. (Hanging Rock is a popular walk due to the excellent views).

Track notes at the end.

Burra Korain Ridge Track: The Scenery

Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains
Pretty typical of the bush that you walk through. It was sometimes more or less dense than this.

A few of the colours and textures from the day.
Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains
Most of the walk was in bush without views, but these were the views from a rocky outcrop on the ridge.

At the first vantage point here, looking down to my second stop, that small rocky knoll centre of picture.

Rocks lining the Victoria Creek valley.

Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains
Looking down the Grose Valley. I think the last vantage point I stopped is in fact that small, flat rocky outcrop on the right.

I was crossing a thin bridge to my last vantage point for views east. It looked rather precarious at first but there was a safe way over.

Some sheer cliffs there.

I asked this crimson rosella to pose for me. I saw small flocks of them twice.
Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains
I’d never come across this kind of fly before, but apparently they are quite common. Possibly a robber fly. Note that it has captured a bee.
Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains
Not sure what species of grasshopper this is.
Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains
A fly with a stripey bum.
Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains
A swordgrass brown butterfly. There were lots of butterflies about. Frequently when I walked near a hollowed out tree a bunch of them flew out.

Amazing how these trees survive such significant fire damage.

Track Notes

Burra Korain Ridge Track, Blue Mountains
The route starts on the fire trail that continues on to near Hanging Rock. Just on the other side of the second gate there is an indistinct impact track heading off to the left. Follow this almost all the way to Burra Korain Head. You might lose the track here and there, but it is never far away. Until, that is, you get within a few hundred metres of the head, at which point you will probably lose the track. Bush bashing to the head for your hard earned views is easy enough.

The route starts on the fire trail that continues on to near Hanging Rock. You’ll likely see a few others on this popular trail.

Just on the other side of the second gate there is an indistinct impact track heading off to the left. Follow this almost all the way to Burra Korain Head. You might lose the track here and there, but it is never far away. Until, that is, you get within a few hundred metres of the head, at which point you will probably lose the track. I did, and couldn’t find it on the way back either, so I suspect it doesn’t exist in this section.

So you’ll need to bush bash to the head for your views. It’s never too difficult – generally just keep to the top of the ridge. By doing this you’ll likely see a rocky outcrop ahead that is the first of the vantage points, with views to the west. From there you can see another spot at the very end of the head that will give you views north. From there you can see the cliff line stretching to the south-east. Follow this a few minutes until you get to another vantage point jutting out from the cliff line. It looks like it might be dangerous to reach it but there is in fact a safe land bridge.

Return the same way. I actually found the  track harder to follow on the way back. For the most part keeping to high ground will help you find the track again.

Roughly 13km return and mostly flat, it will take maybe half a day. Give yourself time to explore the head and take photos.

    1. Hi Oliver. I was thinking of doing Lions Head afterwards after reading your write up. But it was a bit too warm at 2:30 when I finished this one. Saved it for next time :-)
