Anvil Rock Lookout and Wind Eroded Cave, Blue Mountains NSW

Two very short walks in the Blue Mountains near Blackheath – one to Anvil Rock Lookout, and the other visits an impressive wind eroded cave.

Anvil Rock Lookout and Eroded Cave

Two very short walks here: one visiting Anvil Rock Lookout for excellent views up and down the Grose Valley. The other visits a ‘wind eroded cave’ as per the maps, which is a large and very pitted shallow cave, (but more like a rock wall).  In early October there were many wildflowers out, including waratahs by the side of the road.

Track Notes

You don’t need a topo map for these. Head to the end of Anvil Rock Road, off Hat Hill Road, where they have recently built a car park (as of 2024). Walk left to the cave, and right to the lookout. Just 100-200m each. From the cave you can apparently walk along Anvil Ridge to a point back along the road, but we didn’t try this. (You can see the track on Open Topo Map, here). Our main objective for the day was to walk to Bald Head – see that post here.

The wind eroded cave, and my wife Sophia for scale. It’s a pretty cool spot, although I’m not sure something so high and shallow qualifies as a cave exactly.

The waratahs were blooming. These ones were nearby at the side of the road.
